5 of the Best Day Hikes in Queenstown

It's no secret that Queenstown has some of the world's most stunning scenery. There are countless trails to choose from. But lucky for you, we've compiled a list of sure-fire crowd-pleasers.

#1 Ben Lomond Track

  • Duration: 3 - 4 hours return to Ben Lomond Saddle or 6 - 8 hours return to Ben Lomond Summit (advanced)
  • Length: 11km return
  • Need to know: In winter you will need to carry and be able to use alpine equipment such as an ice axe and crampons. The track is often slippery and muddy.

The trek to the summit is a full day's walk with 1,438 m elevation gain, making it one of the most challenging day hikes in Queenstown. On a clear day, you will be rewarded with spectacular panoramic views, and it'll all be worth it. To shorten the hike, you can take the gondola up from the city center instead of walking up/down and start the track from the top of the gondola.

#2 Queenstown Hill

  • Duration: 2 - 3 hours
  • Length: 4.8km return

Perhaps the most popular hike on the list, the Queenstown Hill loop track is a gentler trail that leads to the top of the resident hill. The entire track can be managed within 2-3 hours, and it starts right in town - so there’s no excuse not to hit the trail!

#3 Moke Lake Loop

  • Duration: 2 - 3 hours
  • Length: 6km loop

This scenic, undulating trail is surrounded by mountains and goes right around the lake. Absolute bliss.

#4 Twelve Mile Delta to Bob’s Cove Track

  • Duration: 2 - 4 hours
  • Length: 6.8km return

Follow the shore of Lake Wakatipu to enjoy native bush and isolated beaches. Perfect for a hot summer's day, with plenty of shade and swimming opportunities.

#5 Lake Alta

This track could be considered cheating since the trail starts at 1,600m above sea level, but we just had to include it on the list. From the Remarkables Ski Field car park, the trail climbs steadily to a picturesque glacial lake, which freezes over during colder months.
