5 of the Best Day Walks in Auckland

Hiking isn't the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Auckland... But, we think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the list we've compiled. These trails are the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle.

#1 Te Henga Walkway (Bethells Road to Raetahinga Point)

  • Duration: 2 - 3 hours
  • Length: 8km return
  • Location: West Auckland
  • Drive time from the CBD: Approx 45mins. Directions.
  • Need to know: Bethells Road to Raetahinga Point is open, but the rest of the track is closed until further notice.

A world-class coastal walk with a bird's eye view of Bethells Beach, O’Neill Bay, and the Tasman Sea. Just be careful after rainfall, because the track can get very muddy and slippery in places.

#2 Huna Cossey Dam

Native bush and waterfalls - need we say more?!

#3 Rangitoto Summit Track

  • Duration: 2 - 3 hours
  • Length: 7km return
  • Location: Central Auckland
  • Time from the CBD: A 25-minute ferry ride from Queens Wharf.

This adventure gets bonus points in our books for being accessible via public transport. After a quick ferry, you’ll be treated to lava fields and the world’s largest pōhutukawa forest, before arriving at the top to enjoy panoramic views of Auckland.

#4 Mount William Walkway

  • Duration: 2 - 3 hours
  • Length: 4.5km return
  • Location: South Auckland
  • Drive time from the CBD: Approx 45mins. Directions.
  • Need to know: Closed for lambing from 1 August to 1 October.

After a gentle walk through the bush, the path turns to farmland and climbs to expansive 360-degree views from the Mount William summit.

#5 Pūweto Loop

  • Duration: 2 - 3 hours
  • Length: 9km loop
  • Location: South East Auckland
  • Drive time from the CBD: Approx 1 hour. Directions.

This loop has a bit of everything: beach, bush and farmland. It doesn't matter who you are: the springtime lambs are guaranteed to make you smile.

We can't wait for you to get out there! Make sure you tag @kathmandugear so we can see your epic pics.

Please note:
Many of our favourite trails have had to close in recent years to reduce the spread of Kauri Dieback Disease, which threatens New Zealand's largest native tree. For an up-to-date list of open trails, visit the Auckland City Council Trail Map.
